Athens monuments and the Acropolis
A walk with us through the very heart of Athens brings us to one of most recognisable, historic and most photographed sites in the world, the famous Acropolis with the Parthenon at its summit.
It is a reminder of Ancient Greece’s powerful civilisation and the greatest architectural complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity.
The monuments on the Acropolis (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) have survived for almost 25 centuries.
On this hill that still dominates Athens, democracy and philosophy were born so it is little wonder that a visit to Classical Athens is quite simply awe-inspiring.
The Parthenon is dedicated to the goddess Athena, protector of the city.
At the foot of the Acropolis and its ancient temples lies the oldest neighbourhood of Athens, Plaka. Visitors are mesmerised and charmed by its beautiful houses, cobblestone streets and tiny shops, architecture, elegant atmosphere and neo-classical colours and the well preserved gardens and Byzantine churches.
As we head away from the Acropolis and Plaka, we pass the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Parliament with the familiar sentries or Evzones, synonymous with the city. No visit to Athens can be complete without a stop at the Panathenaic Stadium where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.
We also see the ‘Trilogy of Athens’ which comprises the University of Athens, National Library and the Academy of Athens.
Our three hour odyssey through ancient history ends appropriately at the Squares of Omonia and Syntagma, the very centre of modern day Athens.
Acropolis of Lindos and the Citadel of the Knights.
Let’s begin in unusual fashion, with what you won’t see in Rhodes. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World once proudly stood here.
He was the Colossus of Rhodes and is of course long departed, probably destroyed by an earthquake.
Nevertheless as you arrive on this wonderful, historic island, you may just be able to imagine this statue of the Greek sun-god Helios in 280BC, standing 100 feet tall in celebration of Rhodes’ victory over Cyprus.
The largest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes has a compelling back story and there are still remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St John during the Crusades.
So while the Colossus may not be there, you will be wowed by the many historical sites.
We travel first to Lindos, about 55km from Rhodes Town and high above the village sits the impressive Acropolis of Lindos with the Doric Temple of Athena, built in 300 BC.
Captains’ mansions constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries are dotted here and there and in the heart of Lindos is the Church of the Virgin Mary with lovely frescoes from the 15th Century.
Back in Rhodes is where we are really immersed in the history of the island in the Knights’ Quarter.
We stroll through Gate d’Amboise to walk along the Street of the Knights and see where they lived, separated according to Order, their crests still visible today.
We will also see (outside) the imposing Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, a medieval castle also known as the Kastello. It’s one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. The Byzantine citadel was built in the 7th Century, the palace itself in the fourteenth.
Where the palace sits today could well have been the spot where once stood the Colossus according to recent studies.
Either way, this tour takes us into the heart of the fascinating history of Rhodes.

Polices
1. Before a booking is confirmed, Elite Turkey Tours reserves the right to amend brochure prices due to any circumstances outside the control of Elite Turkey Tours such as but not limited to changes relating to governmental action, increases in transportation costs (including schedule airfares and the cost of fuel) changes in any dues, taxes or fees chargeable for services (including landing taxes or embarkation/disembarkation fees at airports), increases in admission fees and exchange rates.
2. Bank transfers are accepted as the full amount payable as published. Elite Turkey Tours accepts Credit Card, Paypall payments in US dollars.Elite Turkey Tours accepts no responsibility for variations in the final transaction amount due to fees and exchange rates used by banking institutions.
3. Product information is published by Elite Turkey Tours in good faith and Elite Turkey Tours will use its best endeavours to operate all Products as advertised. Elite Turkey Tours reserves the right to change any of the facilities and services described in its publications and to substitute alternative arrangements of comparable monetary value without compensation and accepts no liability for loss of enjoyment resulting from any change.
Amendments and Cancellations by Clients
1. Clients can cancel at any time. The cancellation will be effective as at the time that Elite Turkey Tours receives a written request from the Agent or for direct bookings from the Client, and the following cancellation charges will apply.
1. More than 50 days prior to departure – 65% of the product cost or 40 GBP, whichever is higher.
2. 48 to 45 days prior to departure – 75% of the product cost or 40 GBP, whichever is higher.
3. 40 to 35 days prior to departure – 85% of the product cost or 40 GBP, whichever is higher.
4. 0 to 35 days prior to departure – no refund is given.
5. No refund is given for a partially used Product.
2. After the booking has been confirmed proposed amendments must be written by ‘the Lead Client’ and will incur an administration fee of equivalent to GBP 30.00 except for the first change that will incur no fee or as otherwise agreed. No requested change can be guaranteed.
3. If any number of the party is prevented from travelling because of death, injury or serious illness of the client, close relative or friend, redundancy or jury service, it may be possible to transfer the booking to another suitable person or departure date or tour of similar standard and cost provided that written notice is confirmed by Elite Turkey Tours.
4. If a refund is payable by Elite Turkey Tours to the Client, the refund amount will be calculated according to the conditions set out in Section 2.1 and with consideration of evidence of exceptional circumstances. All bank fees incurred for processing/transferring the credited amount to the client will be the responsibility of the client.
5. In the event that a minimum number product fails to secure sufficient bookings on any departure date, Elite Turkey Tours will inform the Client or Client’s Agent. In such a case the Client will be given the option of changing to an alternative date or Product of comparable value or upgrading to another tour or a refund of all monies paid. In this case, Elite Turkey Tours will use their best endeavours to find a suitable alternative.

Cancellation By Elite Turkey Tours
1. All Elite Turkey Tours Products are subject to a minimum number of participants except for Guaranteed Departure Products listed in Clause 17.
2. Elite Turkey Tours reserves the right to cancel any confirmed booking in any circumstances, however, Elite Turkey Tours will not cancel a Guaranteed Departure Product except in the unusual circumstances of force majeure, defined here as war, threat of war, riot, civil strife, industrial dispute, terrorist activity, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, adverse weather conditions, flight cancellation or any other external circumstances beyond the control of Elite Turkey Tours. Compensation is not available if Elite Turkey Tours is forced to cancel or in any way change a tour due to force majeure but where Elite Turkey Tours is unable to provide the tour booked, Elite Turkey Tours will return to the Client all monies paid to Elite Turkey Tours (less any insurance premiums paid) or offer an alternative date or holiday of comparable standard.
Elite Turkey Tours accepts bookings subject to the following Booking Conditions.
1. A ‘Client’ is all persons named on the booking form intending to travel with Elite Turkey Tours.
2. A ‘Product’ is any service sold by Elite Turkey Tours.
3. All Clients will be deemed to have read, understood and accepted all Booking Conditions.
4. To confirm a booking Elite Turkey Tours requires that the agent has taken full payment of all monies due. A contract between the Client and Elite Turkey Tours comes into existence when Elite Turkey Tours has confirmed the booking in writing and issued a Confirmation. The person signing the booking form (that incorporates these terms and conditions) warrants that s/he has full authority to do so on behalf of all persons whose names appear thereon, and confirms that all such persons are fully aware of and understand these terms and conditions. The said contract, including all matters rising from it, is subject to Turkish Law and the exclusive jurisdiction of the Turkish Courts.
No employees or representatives of Elite Turkey Tours has any right to alter, vary or waive any of these terms and conditions, nor to undertake any liability whatsoever on behalf of Elite Turkey Tours, unless such be in writing and signed by the Director of Elite Turkey Tours. Elite Turkey Tours reserves the right to decline any booking at their discretion without further explanation.
5. When booking 50 % of the product cost is expected. 60 days before the trip rest of the amount is expected.
